Drive In Sci-Fi: Forbidden Planet (1956) Forbiddenplanet1956

Ahh, the forbidden planet, i have been waiting for this. The movie begins with a scene of spaceship landing on a planet far far away form conventional routes. it is supposed to be 22nd century. They finally have a spaceship with a crew of more than few people and a design that looks like it could be a spaceship. It even explains how they invented hyper-drive, so thats a bonus.
They land on the planet they arrive for, at the moment with mission not specified. We find out its exploration they are on. they detect a radio scan, and decide to take no chances, but they get a radio contact. The PHD doctor warns them that they should not land. they want to bring him back. so they decide to land anyway, not seeing any danger to come. The dialogue is already showing high quality of writing. and they havent even landed yet.
As they land they are soon met by a car, driven by a robot. a very nicely done one too. he greets them and asks them to come with him back to resident. It takes 3 (as much as it can fit in his car) back to the residence that is nicely designed. They meet the doctor there, and he is cool from the very beginning. his dialogue seems like out of shake-spear though, which in my opinion is great, but for some it may not stick. he then tells how the robot can make food by building same molecules. The doctor also proves how this robot cannot harm any human. then goes on proving he created the thing, which the visitors claim to be a scientific breakthrough. he also show some safety features like steel shutters. and then he asks then all to leave him alone and leave.
They don't want to leave. he tells a story how an illness killed many of the residents and him and the wife was left alive. except that wife also died. However he has a nice daughter, which shows herself to the young soldiers. and she instantly falls in love with all 3 of them. i smell trouble from her, as usual.
The doctor tells about the graves he dig himself, about the danger and many other things. the crew decides to contact earth for new orders, but to do that would take a rebuilding of a radio. after all, its a 1 year long ride from earth on hyper-drive speed. the doctor wants to help them do it quicker.
During the night something sabotages their equipment and they get angry about the girl not knowing social norms. they go back to talk to the doctor about the sabotage and find the girl swimming nude in the pool. Eventually after another argument they make out and she seems to start feeling something. But the scene is disturbed by a leopard attacking them. They barge into his study and he gets furious about it. but he decides to explain everything. he explains about the race that used to live there but died out almost overnight. He shows the secret base the aliens had and theorizes of what can it be. It shows a machine that tests intelligence and 3d imaging machine, which both seems harmless. He continues to show what he call "Krell wonders" because the race was supposed to be cammed Krell. he continues the tour with some sort of underground city. There is no way to describe the magnitude of the city shown with great effects for its time.
Back at the ship, already in the evening they have built a perimeter of disintegration, not allowing anyone to pass though it. Seems like a good defence against the enemy. Then, we see a invisible enemy hitting the field and retreating. we only see its footsteps. it manages to get though. It murders skipper and they all rush to the ship. they find the footprint and ships doctor decides that no such creature could ever exist. This time they build a fortified field and put out some large cannons in action. they are strong enough to blow up boulders. The monster return, and they fire at it. looks like they hit it. But he's coming on. they keep shooting and he becomes visible for a while, but hes more powerful than the soldiers and blasters don't seem to destroy him. Guess Krell left more than wonders after themselves. It appears that the creature is created by the doctors dreams. The daughter wakes him up and the monster disappears.
They decide to pull out and fly away, except they want to take the inhabitants with them. They get to the house and the daughter lets them in. The doctor has figured the problem while the captain distracted them. all he tells is that "Krell has finished the project, but they forgot monsters from the ED". The doctor helps them in this and explains that it is "elementary basis from the subconscious mind". So the machine makes anything at though. but the Krell forgot that there is a monster in subconscious mind. And that machine have meant the doom of its creator. But they find a flaw, there is no Krell left alive and monster still lives. They come to a conclusion that it is Doctor that created the monster in its subconscious. They try to hide in study but the monster manages to break the doors in there as well while they discuss that the monster was the doctor all along. At the last moment he manages to stop the monster. He tricks the captain into pressing a self destruct button and decides to make the whole planet blow up. They take the daughter and robot with them, but no captain. supposedly he dies, though this is not shown. To end it all we get treated to explosion of the planet.

Story: 10/10. A truly fabulous story of science fiction. they dont make it like this any more.
Acting: 10/10. superb acting from all of the cast. they really got good parts in here.
Sound: 9/10. The only disappointing factor, though it still is way above anything else of its times.
Sci factor: 10/10. although not exactly scientifically correct, scientifically interesting it was.
Lasting Appeal: 10/10. A true classic this one is.
Overall rating: 10/10.
