Drive In Sci-Fi: Conquest of Space (1955)

There is a space station above earth. It works as a research facility and as a building station of space shuttles. both the shuttle and the station look strangely realistic seeing as this is 1955 and no man set foot in space till 1961. Guess someone done thier homeworks.
The space station seems to be ruled by a cold captain that acts worse than nazi. he punishes his crew for miscalculating shuttle arrival time by 1 second and talking about icecream. Apparently he goes after anyone that talks anything not work related, has his son trapped on the station and who knows what more. one of the people start having space sickness, and the doctor takes the time to explain all he knows about it to the chief commanding officer therefore telling us about it. its not a bad explanation, so it goes well. it looks like chief nazi also has it. but he hides it from the others. Other than that the crew looks like a military camp. the main attraction is the special crew that builds spaceships and is on a special diet. it also has to be pretty much isolated. they eat pills for food, and discuss whether that works. the rest of space station eats normal food, so what's the deal with them? the general consensus is that someone is preparing them to fly that shuttle. And during the lunch metero hits the station, they things goes to hell but they manage to pull it off with some sort of metal places. and it goes stable again.
The colonel gets promoted to general and gets new orders. the new spaceship is made to go to the Mars. The now general who first though space travel is the top thing in the world now suddenly think its madness. they are going to mars to search for new materials though, yeah, like moon didnt have enough of them? He still goes on the mission though as is asked of him. His kid who was allowed to leave dont want to any more. quick change of heart people will have in future. He follows the rule of "if there are no volunteers we will make some" and chooses people himself, though still calling it volunteering. The volunteers make speeches why they want to go, generally overpopulating and search for metals. Last volunteer reasons with "i hate to see everyone eat with chopsticks so CHECK". the people who dont go gets really happy about it, exept captains friend, who is insulted they dont take him on the journey.
Late in the evening everyone is told about what is happening and the wives/mothers of the astronauts have a private conversation on the air that supposedly is the last one before the journey. They lift off with sad faces caused by g-forces. They also have something called "space speed indication", hehehe. The captains friend - Mahone - also gets into the ship and they only discover him after they are up and away. so now we got a 6 man crew. The general suddenly becomes religious and thinks travel to other planet is blasphemy. its the same person who built space station. well then why did you build it in the first place?
During their journey they meet some huge pulsating mass object flying into them. looks like a organic thing. Meteor fragments follow it and they manage to hit one crew member. He appears to be dead. they dont bother getting him back into the shuttle for some reason, i mean, you cant try to help him or anything or at least put him away? Eventually after the general reads some bible he lets the body loose to drift in space.
Eventually they reach Mars and take a landing. The general wants to kill everyone by speeding into the planet. However he does not succeed. thanks to his son. They happen to land in a place where there is a lot of soil. the ship leaks water supply and thus water the land. they of course dont like the leakage. The cause is General. who is trying to blow the ship up. Once again the son saves the thing, but this time he shoots his father!
There is no water in Mars, but then they find out it snows. so there is water after all. yay. They use the snow to replenish their water reserves, which is great news for them. Earthquake attacks them the next morning and traps the rocket. they work day and night to free it, they eventually manage. They leave Mars and fly home to Earth, home at last.

Story: 9/10. very engaging.
Acting: 7/10. defiantly above standard.
Sound: 5/10. Though annoying in its self it was made somewhat less intrusive and more compelling.
Sci factor: 10/10. i have to give them 10 in here, they definitely managed to strike for realism. well ofc except snow in Mars.
Lasting Appeal: 8/10. Now i know what 2001: a space odyssey ripped off.
Overall rating: 8/10.
