Drive in Sci-Fi: This Island Earth (1955)

We open with a long subtitles of Washington DC. In color. Beatuful and green, unlike the view we see in nowadays movies. Then a guy flies out with a reactive plane to some secret lab where it tries to research new type of atomic energy. Calcium makesi t work, they repeat that multiple times. The whole flight scene is some nice helicopter shots of a plane with calming music. they abused the fact that it waso ne of the rare color sci-fi. As the plane apriaches the research base it looses control and is about too crash untill some green glow and wierd annoying high pitch sound came in and landed thep lane. they all saw it so their pretty messed up about it. They go on experimenting but still no sucess, thne they notice that something came in that they didnt order. it seems indestructible save for runing 3000 volts though it, then it dossapears into thin air. they try to trace the place it comes in but to no suces. another package comes in explaining what it is, a book made of METAL. they recieve more parts and start to build some machine. they dont know purpose or what their building it. but they build it anyway. scientists just construct random stuff that somone they dont enve know tells them to.
Once they finnish they find out that it is a communication device. some old guy invites him into soem group of scinetists to work with. before giving answers the machine destroyes blueprints and itself. so they got nothing again. this is very intruging though. the doctors friend however seems to do nothing but make witty comments during while movie. how he got to be a scientist is beyond me.
The scinetist takes up the offer and decides to leave with the strange group, while elaving his friendi n charge of the atomic project. good way to get rid of that annoying buddy. the group lands in a complete fog with a plane which has 1 chair inside it. it also has no pilot. the assistants start to beg him not to leave, but he leaves anyway on a plane that pilots itself. As he lands down a woman meets him in a car that looks like its made of wood and he wonders why she doesnt remember him, as it turns out she was in his grad class. not all woman want to remmeber thier study days you know hehe. he brings him to exutor, the guy in the machine, that seems to live in an old villa. Appears that the guy recruited worlds best scientists to his villa. the exutor and his assistance seems to have larger heads but noone notices that. they also seem to all have same hairstyle.
After they leave somone calls him to tell him hes behind schedule. havent anyone heard the saying "you cant rush science"? all scientists meet at dinner table as the main hero lures two o them outside with him. The hero is suspiciuos and manadges to isolate them from exutors spies. they tell him that exutor wants to make new soruces of energy and that he brainwashes peopel to do so, though we find out that exutor is agianst the procedure, his employer is forcing him to. they do a show of power by destroying lead plate. and the moralize him about how they want to save lives and whatnot.
The evil leader tells him to grab everyone and destroy the place. how convienient. The scientists make a run for it but they destroy the car. the car was empty however as they jumped into a lake. As they make a run for it alien spacecraft chases them and scoops them in. Meanwhile the research facility goes up in flame. They go to Metaluna, a planet of exutors home. they go though the "thermal barrier" as temperature rises from friction that shouldnt even exist in space. they then converge them to fit the atmospheric pressure of metalonas planet. while in conversion thet fly around soem glowing space asteroids. the scene is generally slow but not boring. the bad side that it has a lot of high pitch noice that sohuld indicate neutrino waves. they also meet some evil people that try to crush them with meteors. They get on Metaluna that is being attacked by the enemy, so they go underground the planet is pretty much a waste.
They want to go to thier planet peacefully but earthlings insult them and tell them we will destroy them. yay a great way to make first contact. baically we jut tell them fuck off we want you dead. thne they hit the only alien that wants to help them and make a run for it. i though earth scientists are supposed to be smart.....
They run away and the good alien helps them come a trnasformation to become humans once again. but the bug monster that was chasing them still keeps coming. he eventually dies from the presure differential. they fly to earth but the spaceship crashes into the sea and explodes. not exactly what you call happy ending.

Story: 8/10. pretty good if we ignore the last few minutes.
Acting: 8/10. great actirs both main and additional.
Sound: 5/10. good sound effects, but the music score was uimpressive.
Sci factor: 8/10. most of the stuff was very well explained and done. enough so for suspense of disbelief. it is unlike many 50s sci-fi.
Lasting Appeal: 7/10. A darn good movie worth remmebering. afterall not always we have a alien who can lie and talk back to their leaders, let alone helping the humasn escape.
Overall rating: 7/10.
