Drive In Sci-Fi: The Day of the Triffids (1962) Thedayofthetriffids1962

Movie based on a quite famous book. A meteorite shower is a spectacular show. and it seems to rain all over the world. it is so spectacular - 99% of population go blind from it. yes, even those who see them at day. interesting. It seems our first survivor is the guy with eye operation. Yeah people like doctors got nothing better to do but be blinded by meteorites. The rest of the people Cant really do much but they try to help those that survived. trains crash, phones are out and all kind of awfulness happen. somehow most people survive train crash though. Apparently dogs are not blind. Eventually the navy person who still can see meets a girl that also can see. but they are quickly attacked by a giant plant. planes fall when pilots go blind as the navy guy and a kid listens to them on the radio. since hes navy he knows his way around the ships docked in port, so they hang out there. Meanwhile the walking and stalking plants attack two people in lighthouse (or something) that can see because they were drunk that night. the plant dont seem to be very smart, but neither seems to be the guy. still he manages to win and stab the plant to death. he eventually cuts his head off and it dies.
The navy guy with the girl starts travelling and finds a house where three more people can see and they are taking care of around 30 blind ones. apparently they somehow comes from london to France, in a car. thats some Jesus car they got. The navy guy tries to persuade the other 3 to go and continue going to Spain for.... whatever reason. The woman in the house wants to persuade them to stay. not a very comfortable situation. Wait, how about people in the submarines, are they blind too? where are they gone?
Eventually they find that there are a lot of Triffids out there that are man-eaters. The old seeing guy says it came from meteorites. The book has it that they escaped a lab during the blindness. i guess remakes in the 70s werent good either. Eventually armed seeing people invades the house they were hiding in and forces everyone to dance. The guy uses deception to get some of the girls out. but there is no time, as the plants attack the house. The machinegun doesnt help against it much. oh well it was worth a try.
Hmm they did find out that submarines are not blind from the place. and they are evacuating seeing people from the naval base. So they decide to go to there and attempt to get rescued. they do find two more people, blind ones, but one of them been blind for long, so she knows her way around well. They make an electric fence for defence, that should hold out walking plants. The baby gets born the same night, hat a coincidence. Yes the blind woman was pregnant. The plants however do come, in masses of hundreds. They do find a way to lure them away and get into the submarine.
The people in the lighthouse gets attacked by Triffids and as they find that seawater kills them they go killing them. that is, the guy goes killing them and the woman goes screaming and being useless. Eventually they defeat the invaders and set out to save the world.

Story: 7/10. a bit of Europe tour but it was fine.
Acting: 5/10. pretty good acting from leads. the blind acted blindly.
Sound: 2/10. still very bad.
Sci factor: 3/10. i have trouble with all people looking at the sky the same night all across the globe just to see a meteorite shower. dont people have jobs to do?
Lasting Appeal: 6/10. i love blindness movies, and this isnt bad one.
Overall rating: 5/10.
