Drive in Sci-Fi: The Green Slime (1968) Thegreenslime1968moviep

The poster looks juicy. On a side-though. Why does EVERY 50s-60s sci-fi show has to have a woman on the poster? why does it have to have one in a movie for that matter? was the feminist movement so strong as to bully Hollywood to make every movie have a woman no matter what, much like the black movement managed to put a black person into a movie no matter what in the 80s? Oh well food for though. It's ok when it is done right (example: forbidden planet), but awful when it is done bad (example: mysterious island).
The movie starts with a space-station commander reading reports and thinking loudly "oh same old crap, nothing exiting ever happens in here". that's just asking for it. Few seconds after he says it they see an asteroid coming in a collision course with earth. Oddly enough this movie seems to have a soundtrack that belongs to the 80s, then again this is late 70s so it may be early influences. The theme song however seems to be pretty well done, reminds me of how James Bond movies used to open up with a song for the movie. The movie looks fine so far, this could be a good evening.
The asteroid, close to 6.000.000 tons of rock, is coming to earth and is due to crash tomorrow. They theorize correctly that such impact would kill life on earth. General sends his old friend to lead the mission to blow it up. All spacemen personnel seems to be a perfect shape people. which is realistic, NASA took the best test pilots for the first mission. their physical shape is very important. Unlike in other movies, where we see 80 year old scientists with heart conditions going up first flight to mars. The only exception seems to be a rather old aged yet good shape scientist who gets on board last minute (officially granted).
On the asteroid, they find a green slimy living creature. set up the bomb and fly off. they are told they must blow it up at 3 PM and they know they cant outrun the blast in time. But the old captain knows its thing. he goes full speed, whole the rest of astronauts pretty much faint from the G-forces. he manages to make it and survive the explosion. But their troubles don't end here. The decontamination protocol gets breached when they return. the boss wants it run 3 times. But the slime that accidentally got on one of their costumes gets though. yeah, they cant see that there is a hole and green slime on a costume, seriously? The others don't want him to be so struck, to allow some people to do mistakes because its human. Right, like you got a margin for error running space station.
They go to celebration, dancing, champagne, ect. But the clothes decontamination makes the slime grow. Radiation sterilization seems to feed him. The slime causes an alarm and so the dance gets interrupted. There is also a love triangle between the old commander, station commander and his fiancée. Apparently she is the old ones ex. They find some dead slime and start a search for any living parts. better safe than sorry, after all it killed a man (that causes the alarm). It electrocutes another man hat happens to be on its patch to draining electricity from the base. They find a weird looking creature near the reactor. First they try to capture it. Has gun and a net is first try, dont seem to take any effect. He gets caught in the net but burns right though it. And starts electrocuting the base. they scare him with blasters but he come back to attack those that shoot. his attack is instant deadly electrocution so dont mess with that. After he retreats into a ventilation shaft they talk about whether to kill it, since this is the first time something living was found in space. eventually they decide to kill it with argument "tell it to the wives of the dead soldiers". Fair enough, it kills us so we shoot back.
The creature attacks a hospital and they start firing on him. Meanwhile the local scientist manages to find that the creature reproduce by sucking up all form of energy. So they decide to trap it. But he already spawned more monster via its blood. So they try to isolate that as well. The alien the electrocutes himself to heal himself. He also spawns more creatures from that. Wait ho he spends his own energy to grow, wouldn't that make it perpetum mobile? One could argue that light energy they use to lit the rooms and space radiation helps him grow, so this is still in realms of possibility. They cut all power from rooms the monster is trapped in hoping it will keep the monsters quarantined. They make a fair plan to lure and trap the creatures in storage room. They succeed in their plan to lure the monster in the storage room but the soldiers are still trapped inside together. But eventually the plan succeeds and they get the monster in the storage room. The monster however manages to break though the door. Hes not as weak as it appears to be. Their traps dont work and the tension between the two commanders increase when one of them manages to let them though airlock panel 1. however second airlock panel still manages to block thier way. they find explosive barrels tough and quarter of stations goes up in flames. That explosion should have either destroyed the monsters or made them incredibly large. The video cameras make them look like they are drugged. However sunlight starts to heal them dead ones and they start multiplying again.
After this failed efforts they decide to abandon the place and blow it up. Its good thing they didnt bring it to earth. but the monsters are blocking escape hatch. They go space flying to take their attention away form the escape hatch. it seems to wkr, a fight outside of station, yay. They also use solar power supply as diversion, as the monsters go after all the power they can get. They manage to launch all escape shuttles but one that is supposed to carry our main heroes of the movie. They are left behind to activate the self destruct sequence. The station is set to fly away. Then they fly away. we win the day.

Story: 8/10. logical and follows nicely. the only mistake is how could no one notice the torn costume during decontamination?
Acting: 8/10. pretty well on this department as well. after all, we get a treat of original BOND girls. there is more ties than jut the song.
Sound: 6/10. this was a blessing to my ears after that many hours of awful soundtracks on those movies.
Sci factor: 8/10. their decontamination procedures seems to have consisted of radiation, then more radiation. other than that pretty good.
Lasting Appeal: 7/10. definitely a keeper. certainly loved it.
Overall rating: 7/10.
