Drive-in Sci-Fi: Phantom Planet (1961) Phantomplanetposter01

Apperently in 1961 moon was a launchbase for rockets. then we get philosophical though whether there are aliens or not.
So a giant asteroid aproackes some spacemen and they crash. but no, this is no asteroid, this is actually a planet that can move on its will made out of buch of asteroids. looks more like a bunch of flying turds really. So they send another rocket to find out what happened. they know it crashed into a "phnatom planet" but not why. how about gravity, cant they figure such thing up? the captain of pegasus 4 (the inspection rocket meant for mars) reports that its "almost too quiet". no shit sherlock its SPACE. the next comment is "you can almost go insane waiting for something to happen". yeah dialogue isnt something this movie can be proud of. anyway, they get into a magnetic field and find a bunch of meteors. yay finally they actualyl identify them as meteors. they manadge to evade them but then go chase them. mroe flying turds, erm, asteroids are coming and eventually they manadge to evade them all too. they soon find out that evne though they evade the meteor shower their mainboard and propulsion is smashed. now how did that happen. so they go inside spacesuits and finds a smoking box on the exterior. yay for smoke in space. then they get attacked by what looks like small meteors and one of them get killed, even if the meteor bounces off his helmet. ok ill atribute that to poor effects. the second astronaut gets hit too and floats away in space. apperently he had no propulsion on his spacesuit.
after some time the other apperently not dead astronaut wakes up and walks around like nothing happened. as he faisl to find his friend he is more intrested in another meteor shower now. the asteroid is "drawing" him. so he decides to land and totaly forgets about his friend. did you knew that a rocket can land like helicopter? well this one just did.
So he goes outside and intentionally falls down on the surface. Then falls again and looses conciuosness. we get some memory sequence or something. and then we see tiny people that all look exactly the same come to him. theastronaut then also shrinks to those people size for some reason. then we get to some trial in the mini people land. apperently he is now prisoner and they can speak english. no, they manadge to translate it. Apperently the proportion of the world makes them smaller or larger automatically. this is the worst explanation of size of aliens i have ever heard. by that logic going to the moon would make us 6 times smaller.
wow, this is getting even better. the primitive ways or Reytons or whatever do they call their planet is due to the choice. they pulled a thoery that people became too lazy when machines started to do everything for them and started fighting eachother. so they banned all science and went back to manual labor. and thne the astronaut comments that same thing happens at Earth, IN 1961. how crazy the writers were in this one?
So the kick the rocket out of the planet and trap him inside, forcing to live there. during that time humans detect the runaway rocket, fly to it, litteraly jump ship and get inside. why did they made door opening controls on the outside too is beyond me.
One of the locals challenge him to a duel, apperently - to death. if you push your opponent onto a gravity plate he disintegrates. so much for laws of gravity. obviuosly earthman wins the battle but doesnt kill the opposition. then siddenly solarites attack. for those wondering, they are mosnter that fly in ships that are on fire. they manadge to detroy them in one blast of their gravity weapon. but the prisoner solarite escapes. instead of going on rampage it goes to touch one of the chief daughters hair. yes there are two of them, and one is mute too. the monster does not look harmless at all. what are they fighting for anyway.
eventually the mosnter knocks the chief and gets on a run. the monster almost falls down as he walks, bad costume. evenrtuall they manadge to lure him into the gravitational plates and ahe disintegrates into smoke. solarites were probably the least scary monster in the 60s. the mosnter is deadl, the mute got scared into speaking, they fall in love, the astronaut gets home, your typical happy ending.

Story: 2/10. the story was wierd, unintresting, irracional and clumsy. it doesnt deserve much notice.
Acting: 2/10. main actor was good, but all other cast, especially the alien monster were very bad.
Sound: 5/10. the soundtrack of this movie is a relaxation compared to other movies i reiviewed here.
Sci factor: 0/10. 0 for 0 science and 100% fiction.
Lasting Appeal: 5/10. that it has. a very unusual story going for so bad its good but not there yet.
Overall rating: 3/10.
