The Beta is amazing. It would already be in my top 3 games of all time, and it's a beta.

Starcraft 2 is a multiplayer experience of unparalleled (except for SC1) depth. This is my first proper foray into multiplayer RTS ever*, and already I am hooked. I haven't touched another game for the past 3 weeks since I got into the beta. It may be cliche to say, but SC2 is easy to learn, but hard to master. As a result, the game becomes about subtleties. You can not just mass x number of y units and expect to win. You army composition must be varied in a way that you cover yourself from all counters. At the same time, you can't just get x number of every unit. You have to scout your opponent and check what he is doing. You counter his units, then he counters yours, so on and so forth. All the while you must ensure you macro-manage (use resources efficiently and wisely), and micro-manage (use units wisely for highest cost effectiveness). You must expand you base to gain access to new resources, tech up to higher tier units, harass your opponents resource gatherers and maintain map control. And the list goes on. Every action must be undertaken with diligence and sharpness of mind.

It's no wonder that this franchise has become such a phenomenon in video gaming. It is more or less, the only game which provides players with the ability to truly excel, both physically and mentally. Players on the professional circuit will usually have APM (actions per minute) between 200-300. That is up to 5 actions per second. That, is fucking insane. That is Starcraft: Chess on steroids.

If you've ever wanted a game that would mentally tire you after a few hours, then Starcraft 2 is the way to go.

*I never really got into the competitive side of SC1. Me and my friend played fun mod maps instead. I was too young to see the enjoyment that could be had out of pwning people.

Starcraft 2.....epic? Empty
PostSubject: Re: Starcraft 2.....epic?   Starcraft 2.....epic? Icon_minitimeWed Jul 28, 2010 4:45 pm

I got it yesterday. I'm not so great with reviews so instead, here's a rundown of my first few hours with the game:

Out of the box:
- The game comes with 4 "guest passes," 2 for World of Warcraft and 2 for Starcraft 2. I have given away one of the Starcraft passes already, hit me on Xfire if you want one of the others.
- The game is a 12 gig install so make sure you have the space.
- There is a zero-day patch, it is less than 60 megs but it may take a long long long long time because of server loads and in my case it completely stopped 3 times. Using task manager to kill the process and relaunch the game restarted it and it remembered where it stopped, just like Steam does.

Finally getting started:
- You must have a Battle.Net account to play. After you get that set up, the game will remember your name, but NOT your password so take that how you will.
- Nearly ALL of the achievements are unlocked in online league matches. Normally I wouldn't care about that, but in this case, achievements unlock actual stuff in the game, so since I can't play online there is effectively a large portion of my game that I will never see.
- The game will also import your Facebook friends into Battle.Net. Seems odd to me, but I'm sure it's useful to somebody.

In-game:
- Graphically, the game is beautiful, it is highly detailed for an RTS. I was telling Nomad that the Zerg look so disgusting (in a good way) that it's actually a little disturbing. The Creep looks, well creepy. If I saw this stuff in my lawn I wouldn't bother trying to figure out what it was, I'd just move to another state. And keep in mind that I live in a swamp, so if it looks disgusting to me then you know it's really bad, lol.
- There are a LOT of maps to skirmish on, I don't think I've ever seen so many in a new release before. You also get the map editor tool.
- The music in the game seems really out of place to me. It reminds me of something you might hear as background music in a department store or something. Of course you can just mute that and fire up winamp in the background , so who cares.
- There are lots of new units and the new high detail makes the old units look insanely good. I could watch a Templar float across the map with his gold cape flowing in the wind for hours.... in fact I did exactly that just this morning.

I have not started the campaign yet because I've been playing skirmishes to reacquaint myself with the game. But like I said, there is a ton of stuff to unlock, if you are able, so any RTS fan should enjoy this for a long time. I foresee this game being the cause of death due to somebody forgetting to eat while they were playing.

If anyone doesn't know, what kvadrate is referring to about "1/3 of game costs 60$" is that Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty is the first part of a trilogy. The story mode of this game is based on the Terran race. Both Protss and Zerg are available in the skirmish/custom games and online league matches, but story-wise, this game is heavily focused on Terrans.

The release dates are still just rumors right now, but it looks like the next expansion will be early 2011, based on the Zerg part of the story, and titled StarCraft 2:Heart of the Swarm. Some time after that, we will see StarCraft 2:Legacy of the Void, which will be the Protoss part of the story.

Personally, I have no problem with the game being broken up this way, it is the same method that Warhammer 40K has used with great success. And just think, with each new story, comes new maps.

But I do understand and respect your feeling of not wanting to pay for what is essentially is only part of a full story. With that in mind, Blizzard will have to be careful how they price the expansions. If they cost too much and do not offer the same value as the base game (Wings of Liberty) then people may indeed begin to feel ripped off. There are few things that backfire worse than a developer "milking" an IP.

yes i also don't mind having the games divided up into three and although i can understand what kvadrate is saying it would be the same as saying im not going to watch the "lord of the rings" movies because they are in three parts, from what i have been reading the single player campaign is awesome for this game and well worth the price tag alone, add to that the other features of MP/skirmish etc and its very good value for money......

what interests me is how Russians have to pay a monthly fee to play the game looking here it seems as though you get the price of the game much much cheaper than us prices and insanely cheaper compared to nz/aussie where its $100 and after the first year of use you would have to pay 100 rubles per month, but you can also pay around 30 euros and get the full euro version of the game and play on their servers for no cost......so really it doesn't seem to be a big problem to me.....

here's the link of the source file i used http://www.gamepro.com/article/news/214807/russian-starcraft-2-gets-monthly-fees

I was pleasantly surprised about this game, i hated the first but Woogie gave me the trial and i played the first mission in campaign and fell in love the Starcraft 2. I will definitly be buying this game, Mafia 2 is above it there is no changing that but it is at the top of my list to get. So i will be playing with some of you guys soon enough with it.

Gameplay is great, everything runs great and feels great, controlling units is fun, not really work. The battle animations are amazing, i love seeing a line of terrans mow down zerg with their machine guns its great. And when you get bigger units like the flame guys(forgot their names) it gets even more fun as you mix squads of units up for different attacks and tactics.

Graphics, amazing, looks better than any RTS I've ever played. I get a little glitch across the screen maybe once a game but its for like half a second and its nothing to be worried about or decrease the amazingness of the graphics.

The story is great, i love the characters, especially Tychus Findlay, i wish he was like a playable hero character. I was a little upset when you got to play with a hero unit in the first mission but not in any of the rest as of yet. The missions are great variety, not the same stuff over and over again. Highlight has been the night and day mission it was great.
