Once again we go into the world of Jules Verne, a genius writer. This time we are travelling to the center of the earth in the eyes of Henry Levin who has a long history of film making in this period.
There is an order of Knights of science. And they seem to all be singing about geology and history. One student gives his teacher a gift - a exceptionally heavy piece of lava. He likes the gift, being geologist and all, and goes on to study it. Inside they find a man-made object which i cant make out. "plumbar" or something like that. There is a writing on it.It is signed by a scientist that dissipated. his main theory was that there is another word bellow the earth.
He sets off to Iceland to the volcano to find the entrance to the center of the earth, and the student of his, the one that found the rock goes as well. They go there and face some resistance. Although the resistance sees to be coming by a hired hand. A horseman kidnaps both guys and places them into his basement, which is feather storehouse. They escape with a help of a local and go to their companion hotel room. The guy is definitely prepared, he is ready to go into the cave. Except that he is dead. So they take his equipment and go on themselves together with the dead mans wive. She wants to help the goal her husband wanted to reach, and therefore does everything that is in her power so the expedition succeeds. They dont really like her coming but that is necessary evil.
As they wander in the caves they are attacked by a waterfall, they manage to get out however into some kind of upper level of the cave and out of the water. Then they find what appears to be a salt mine with salt all round. The salt moves and steals the bad of the poor doctor with all his food and equipment, like a quicksand. The doctor jumps after him and falls in as well. The other three goes searching for him but to no avail. However the local explorer finds him first, and also the other 3. He says they must go and leave 1 man with them or all of them dies. He gets tricked out of the gun, and therefore they want to kill him instead. But noone of them want to do it. However he teaches them about cold-light in the caves and other wonders of the underground so they allow him to tag along. He also shows them giant mushrooms, food, and clothing, even wood can be made out of these. They are so happy they start dancing. They also find an ocean nearby, but it also has some giant lizards, supposedly dinosaurs, that are meat eaters. They cant swim though and so the humans hide in the water. Afterwards they use spears to kill one but more show up and eat it before they can get to make some lunch out of him. They build a raft (in like 10 seconds) and sail to the ocean that they discovered. a nice way to escape the superdinosaurs.
As they said, suddenly all the metal items start flying away, as they approach the center of the earth, the juncture of magnetic forces between north and south poles. interesting theory. They literally sin into the whirpool thats there. They end up, somewhere. The local person slaughters the pet duck and it gets killed for it, finally. But not by their hand but by freak accident. They wander off further and find some ancient city of some kind. They also find an updraft and try to escape that way. But a giant lizard pretending to be a dinosaur again starts glowing red and goes off a killing rampage. That is partly due to the fact that they make an explosin in the updraft because you know simply going up is a bad idea. The lava that the explosion caused to burst kills the lizard. and they sort of start to swim in a guant plate on top of the lava. They swim into the updraft and are carried upwards by it. They are rescued by some fishers and get back to surface. One guy is thrown out of the palce and lands in a monastery even. Altrough they are praised, he wants no fame for it.
Story: 7/10. the story was ok, but a bit ruined by additions of movie versus book.
Acting: 7/10. acting was well, especially the Norwegian guy (that played an islander)
Sound: 4/10. a bit better than usual, but not good.
Sci factor: 4/10. This is a fluke in Jules Vernes writing, the only time i know that his science didnt hold up. Most other things, like submarines, we have and use nowdays.
Lasting Appeal: 8/10. quite an impression from the journey anyway.
Overall rating: 6/10
