Drive in Sci-Fi: War of the Worlds (1953)

I must admit i read the book long time ago when i was a kid so i only remember the main parts. I have seen the new adaptations but not the first one, so my knowledge of this may be a bit dull. Let me know if i start talking nonsense.
This movies budged is estimated to be 2 millions. This was considered a "big budget" for the times and for a Sci-fi movie this was considered huge. Think Avatar huge. Sci-Fi was a forgotten market in movie industry still. This one is in color, and even though colour was not that uncommon in the 1953 (after all there are color movies from 1939) most sci-fi couldn't afford it because it was still a pricey trick.
The movie begins with telling us the basic facts, Martians running out of space on Mars, plans to colonize the other planets on the system. It tells us the Martians reasoning why earth is the only one worth possessing. Its air and plant-life is what they want.
A meteorite comes to earth, causing fire in nearby forest. Or is it a meteorite? Luckily there are 3 scientists fishing nearby. The local sheriff tells them about the landing and they go to investigate it, in the morning. Looks like a whole group of people gets there in the morning. All sort of businessmen, some want to open a food stand for tourist, another to search for gold in there, ect. This allows us to meet all the characters without looking forced. The scientist has a Geiger counter, and turns out that the meteor is radioactive. This is nothing strange, as meteors are often radioactive because they soak radioactivity while travelling in space and being bombarded by radioactive waves of sunlight (or other starts light).
While waitin for it to cool off They go dancing and camping, only 3 guys remain at the location. Suddenly it starts to move, and its a large screw unscrewing. A giant eye comes out of it and scans the 3 poor people. They shout "Were friends" and wave the white flag, but the eye still shoots them. The thing starts shooting lasers and destroys everything. They automatically assume its an alien machine. Smart characters for once. Army gets involved real soon. They also find out that many meteors like that land all across the globe. The Martians start destroying everything and only those that run into riches live. So far the spaceships does nto move from thier landing areas, therefore there is no imminent danger. But the army doesn't sleep, you got jeeps, tanks, more jeeps, more jeeps and trucks. Havent they already destroyed trucks? why bother send in more. few Shermans i understand.
They set up trenches, and wait for aliens to take the first step. they turn out to be flying machines. The book had them walk on 3 very long legs, here they are flying, and they also have some shield that looks like a glass dome (probably the special effects they used) that deflect even tank shells and rockets. The aliens dont like begin attacked and destroys all the military has set against them.
They start raiding cities, destroying them and nothing is stopping them, the army is becoming hopeless, the scientist saves the girl and they lay on the grass like nothing is wrong in the world. They even find farmhouse and cooks cooks eggs. They discuss their lives to pass the time and remove the stress, not that wrong in a situation like this. This movie does seem to be well made overall, not just money thrown at it with no clear direction. This is interrupted though by another meteor-alien landing on top of the house itself. They dont hurry to leave though, even if it would kill them the instant they saw them. They instead decide to spectate them and look out for what could be gained by this.
They spot alien space camera, then the alien itself, who somehow came out of the machine for whatever reason. the alien gets scared and runs from them, they get a camera though. They also notice that aliens have blood. We got some overview of what happens around the world in a narrator style show, as europe, india, china, south america is destroyed. They even destroy Eiffel tower.
They decide to take the last stand and use the atom bomb to kill the Martians. It doesn't even scratch them. The cities are being evacuated and the looting occurs. However the lab they want to set up to find a way to defeat the enemy does nto get equipment because the looters are stealing the trucks. you know, military escort was too much to as for saving the whole world right?
The poor guys being throw out of trucks, including the lead scientist, takes shelter in the local church. Finally, the machines stop and crash. They died form the germs that we are immune against. After all the manhood failed, the humanity was saved by the little beings, bacteria.

Story: 10/10. a great story very well told.
Acting: 6/10. acting was pretty good compared to the others.
Sound: 4/10. This is where this movie does not feel right, but it has its moments.
Sci factor: 10/10. I found no major flaws.
Lasting Appeal: 10/10. This is a classic, the story works in all generations.
Overall rating: 8/10
