Hard Reset is an action-packed, single-player shooter for the PC. With over-the-top destruction, loads of enemies, great weapon variety
and a beautifully realized cyberpunk setting, Hard Reset is sure to shake up the shooter scene.
This is not a full game review, this is just a Quick & Dirty or what some people might call a "first impression" review.
So here's the dirtiest of the Dirty:
- Yes, Hard Reset is an Indy game
- Yes, it currently costs 30 bucks, I know, that's crazy for an Indy
- Yes, the "cutscenes" are just motion-comics
"...wait, hold up, stop right there. A $30 Indy with comic-panel cutscenes? Well what did they spend that money on, porn?"Shut your face, nobody pays for porn, I don't care what my MasterCard statement says. Hard Reset spent that money on
making stuff 'splode, and it 'splodes good, real good.
Tired of jumping over cars? 'Splode them shits!
Want to get in that store? 'Splode that shit!
Want the powercell from street machines? 'Splode them shits!
Annoyed by that jerk on his cellphone while you're fighting? Politely ask him to move to safety... what did you think I was going to say?
Games that follow the "blow-up everything" mantra generally give you a ton of weapons, but Hard Reset is little different: you
technically only have two guns to begin with, an energy/plasma weapon and a ballistic/explosives weapon. You earn points to upgrade your two guns to
have different weapon capabilities. For example your plasme rifle upgrades to a Paralyzing EMP and then to a Lightning Rifle. And when you
have multiple upgrades you just scroll through them and the weapon transforms or morphs right in your hand. Sounds weird at first but it makes
sense when you see it and it's kinda cool.
The upgrade stations also upgrade your body armor, but at the time I didn't have enough points to test any of the upgrades.
The story: What's left of the human race is at war with super hi-tech machines *cough*The Matrix*cough* blah blah there's a twist blah blah blah.
Honestly I haven't heard a word anyone has said to me even though the voice acting is actually okay, give or take the occasional mispronunciation
(I do not mean accents). The comics also are really well done, they are easily on par with the motion comics you see as extra features on Blu-Ray
movies. They do a nice job of moving the story and explaining why you just saw a guy thrown from a 3rd-story window screaming in agony as he
narrowly misses you only to splatter into a broken heap of meat on the pavement... but who cares... I just want to hurry up and fight the thing that
did that to him! Which BTW, promptly came out and raped me. Yep, 'sploded all up in my...
...thank goodness for autosave.
Speaking of autosave, there are a lot of times when I think the game is meant to surprise you, but when the event happens you are not really surprised
because you saw the game autosave. I'm not saying autosave is bad at all, I'm just saying it's there.
There are little nods here and there that this Dev Team is showing they were not too super serious with the game: I noticed that a random trash bin
on the street kinda sorta looked like it had legs, if you squinted at it. So being a clown, I put a bullet through it. The trash bin then screamed
and ran away. Um, yeah.
The game is an unheard of crossbred child of Terminator, The Matrix, Tron, and Sin City and probably more movies I just don't recognize, and if
you tease him about his moms obvious after-dark activities, he's going to rape your face with a bazooka.
- The graphics look great, screenshots really do this game NO justice that's why I didn't bother taking any.
- The sound it pretty good. Loud volume is always a plus when things 'splode and it's great when the sound is nice and crisp.
- I'm honestly not sure if the game has music... odd. If there's a soundtrack, I didn't hear it over the sound of my flagrant disregard for public property.
Maybe the music was so well blended that it just didn't distract me from the game by making itself noticeable. Or maybe I just didn't give damn, who knows.
- The controls are simple, easy and re-mappable .
My opinion: Hard Reset is worth your time. It's loud, it looks good, it's that perfect kind of hard that makes it fun when you die because you
know you can beat it next time, instead of reloading 1000 times until you beat a puppy to death with your keyboard to relieve the frustration.
So what's the point of reviewing a game that has a demo? I don't know, I was bored.
