The Thing (1982) Thing

Essentialy John Carpenter's remake of a movie i have reviewed earlier with same title. However altrough the premise is the same the movie itself differs both by the alien and by characters inside. it looks like Mr, Carpenter took the main idea of the movie and improved it into more modern way. Oh and he used a lot of gore too.

The movie opens with a guy from helicopter shooting huskies, what a change from the 50s vrsion. the whole research station is much smaller too but inside the main idea is similar, living room, greenhouse ect. excelt this time we have computers. A person speaking unknown language comes into camp chasing the huskie with his weapon and gets shot down by the inhabutants of station 4. little does the inhabitants know that husky is actualyl controlled by alien. Thier radio suddenly decides to stop working, yay. they cant report what happened and the winter is coming. tension starts to build, but this time they have a doctor, a real doctor not a crazy alien breeder. They actually know its norvegian, so they decide to go to thier base to find out. both theirs and norvegians bases at least look like a base made for peopel to live now instead of a bunker or a freezer so thats good.
when they get to nevegian base they find it trashed and dead, definately fighting occured. they find slaughtered bodies. they also find a ice grave that is empty and burned bodies so they decide to leave and go home, all the norvegians are dead. They do autpsy on one of the dead norbvegians that has its face distorted and find nothing abnormal in them. woot. they got television though, television works but not radio, WOOT? no it happens to be a VCR player afterall. false alarm.
the dog that survived shows his true sense and turns into a monster. and as humans come to check it out they manadge to trap it. it eats some other dogs meanwhile and is jut a bunch of gory stuff. it also mandges to escape. but they manadge to tortch it and do an autopsy. they find out that it imitates body parts thus creating their own imitation of our animals. but they find that there is also non-dog parts in it. the doctor goes paranoid and thinks other people can be imitation by that creature.
they go and see what norvegians did and see that they extracted it via thermite charges, good homage to the earlier version of the movie.
the doctor does some research and decides that its likely that the inhabitants are already infected. he also figures that the remains they brought back are not dead but its too late as the monster strikes. they catch him, burn the bodies and everythign asociated with it and thinks its safe. poor people dont know whats coming. One of thier teammates, Blair, is acting wierd and he sabotages the helicopter, so noone can leave. The doctor wants to detry everything to not let the mosnter get out. but runs out of ammo. he gets 10 for trying and 0 for being shot. they lock him in a toolshed for "his own safety". yeah right, they got no idea how right they are. they all start to go slightly mad, and it focuses on them rather than the monster, so it gives an intrestin drama about whos infected and whose not. One by one the peopel start dieing. After some of them went missing outside they start baricading thmeself inside with boards. The monster attacks out of the body of a fatman though as it still ends up being inperfect imitation of human. apperently it has trouble adapting to complex body structure we have, so theres still time. the monster escapes once again though. They go try to make sure wh is infected and who is not by variuos torture methods hoping that the mosnter would react. that apperently works.
but the troubles not over, as the guy that was locked up in a shack is building a spaceship in there trying to escape. so their plan - burn everything. the shit hits the fan and mosnter starts to take revenge in form of mutated dogs dinosaurs and whatnot all merged into one. but fear not for dinamite is almighty.
eventually only childs and macready remains at the destroyed base and neither knows if the other one is infected. the result ends up them both having to die so the thing would surely be destryed. they decide to wait and see, and we are left with an open ending right there.

I said it before and ill say it agian, John Carpenter is a genius of horror.

rating: a big fat 10/10
